"P2P" (Peer to Peer)
is a type of network (ie Gnutella) where files can be shared among
users without the need to store any files on a central server.
Now please bear in
mind that these types of file exchange arrangements are prone to
virus infections. From time to time, a "virus alert" will
be issued. Some of them are real, some of them are "hoax". Virus Alert 23/8/02
A "hoax virus" claims to be malicious, but is a joke or a
threat for getting your attention. A true virus may destroy your
hard drive or files.

What is Gnutella?
Gnutella slips you into the world of anything goes. You enter the network
using a gnutella servent (program) that connects to several other servents
on the network. Your servent continually maintains a certain amount of connections
with other servents usually based on the speed of your connection. These
connections can be outgoing (you connecting to another), or they may be
incoming (another connected to you!)These connections are all you need to
access the vast libraries that are being shared by users on the public gnutella
networks.
A "host" is represented by the address (IP) of a user - you have
an IP and everyone else on the network does as well.
Connecting to the network
To enter into the public gnutella networks all you need is a starting host
(ip) to connect to that is already a part of the network. Luckily most programs
used to connect to the networks automatically find current hosts by connecting
to a computer that maintains a list of current ips on the network. Once
your servent has a list of hosts to try to connect to it begins trying to
connect to them. Depending on the speed of your connection to the internet,
a servent will try to maintain 3-8 connections with other hosts. Connections
are frequently lost and Gnutella servents will automatically start attempting
to connect to another host from it's constantly changing list of hosts it
gathers.
Gnutella servents
A servent is a program that you use to access the Gnutella network. A servent
is both a SERVer and a cliENT. Read more about Servents here. There are
many programs available now with new features being added all the time.
Here are our top Gnutella servents:
Please be advised that some of these programs may contain spyware that
are basically harmless to yur computer but they do keep track of your surfing
behavior among other things. More on this....

Gnucleus
- Just edges XoloX out because of advanced features such
as super-peers and file hashing. With such advanced features,
Gnucleus is a testament to open source development. Compared
to BearShare and LimeWire, the only thing this application
lacks is bitrate information. |
2. |
XoloX - XoloX
has become a favorite of many in the P2P community due to its simplicity.
XoloX has no spyware, which is a relief to those who cherish their
privacy. We look forward to future versions that should employ supernode
technology. |
3. |
Shareaza
- Shareaza has been launched onto the Gnutella scene with a wealth
of features and no adware/spyware. |
4. |
LimeWire
- A very good servent for accessing the gnutella network, easy to
use and produces results. Has multi source intelligent downloading.
Fast connection to the network. |
5. |
BearShare - BearShare
has added bitrate information to the search results. This feature
alone is an immense improvement on the bitrateless state that Gnutella
has suffered until now. Also easy to use and produces results. The
indulgence of advertising diminishes the Gnutella experience a bit.

Morpheus - Morpheus
is staging it's comeback - well sort of, now working on the Gnutella
network. The current preview release is known to have MANY bugs
that cause GREAT headaches. We currently do not recommend getting
this version. Once these problems are corrected we will have a
full guide.
A LOT MORE ON THESE NETWORKS TO COME......................
